Perceived delay in the teaching of reading and writing
It is important for parents to understand that the Muktangan approach is not traditional. Our focus is not on conventional literacy-training or rote learning. One mother expresses her concern that the school does not get into writing early on. She says, “My daughter is two years and seven months. When my son was that age, he knew the alphabets from A to Z. I wonder when she will learn?”
Use of mother-tongue in school
Muktangan believes that a child learns best when instructed in his/her first spoken language; and in India this is rarely English. Hence, while English is spoken by the teachers during the language sessions, they often use the language children are most comfortable with when explaining concepts and ideas to them. This becomes an area of concern for the parents, as they feel their children are not picking up as much English as they should. Our teachers help the parents to see the benefits of the approach during home and classroom visits and parents-teacher meeting.
