  What is Muktangan?

Muktangan is a community-based project in Mumbai, which runs a teacher training centre integrated into three educational centres. The goal of the project is to create a replicable model of low cost child-centred education.

This educational project is based on the professional experience of one of the trustees, who has worked for decades in the mainstream educational system across rural and semi-urban areas of India. The project has been promoted by and is run under the aegis of Paragon Charitable Trust, Mumbai, under a collaborative M.O.U. with the Brihanmumbai Muncipal Corporation as a laboratory school.

  Whom does Muktangan serve?
This project is targeted at the low-income communities in the Worli, Lower Parel and Prabhadevi areas of Mumbai. It is currently housed in classrooms in two municipal schools. However, our processes are replicable across the entire socio-economic spectrum.

What is the need for Muktangan?

The purpose of the project is to offer meaningful education to economically disadvantaged sections of society, by adopting more effective teaching methods and increasing child-teacher interaction in class through the enhancement of the teacher-student ratio.

The project also provides the young women of the community with an opportunity for meaningful employment, to educate themselves professionally and to contribute to the community, while simultaneously becoming financially independent.

How are the project's objectives being met?
  The objectives are met through:

The teacher training program which aims to train young women from the community in a well-researched preschool and primary methodology. The theoretical training is directly linked with practice as the programme is conducted within the two schools run under this project,

The School which is structured innovatively to help these children gain the most out of their schooling. The approach focuses on conceptual understanding, through direct experience. Here, unlike in the traditional schools, writing and reading are viewed as tools for communication, not as ends in themselves. Education is through the medium of English with the mother-tongue being used to enhance understanding. Students are encouraged to develop their own value system through interactive games that promote self-reflection.

What are the future plans of this project?
Paragon Charitable Trust's vision is that over a period of ten years (2003-2012), Muktangan will have researched, demonstrated, documented and successfully advocated the Muktangan approach to the larger system. The approach will be strengthened through the formation of partnerships with other organizations thereby offering opportunities for mutual growth. Having completed the first phase (2003-2006) of Establishment the project is currently in the second phase (2006-2009) of Sustainability- both programmatic and financial- and Outreach. The Third phase (2009-2012) will focus on Documentation & Advocacy.

It differs in its genuinely child centred ideology, its innovative class room layouts, its low student-teacher ratio and its integrated teacher training programme with its reflective practices.

What is the significance of child observation in the training and regular teaching process?
The teachers observe each individual child in the process of learning, making assessment truly ongoing, thus enabling the teaching/learning programme to be responsive to the emerging learning needs of each and every child.

What are the facilities provided by the school to the students? Do these facilities have to be paid for?
Primary education from the age of five years is totally free. All teaching/learning resources including stationary, textbooks and teaching/learning aids are also provided. This is to ensure the ready availability of material in an organised manner when it is needed.

What is the significance of a “home visit” by the teacher?
Home visits enable the teacher to understand the home/family background of each child whilst giving an opportunity for further bonding between parents, teachers and child, as they discuss educational issues in an environment in which the parents are comfortable.
